Dancesport – A Ballroom Dancing Competition
Ballroom dancing has evolved to something more than just a social dance performance. Today, people train in various ballroom dancing techniques to join dancesport competitions as social events, sports activity, or even in the Olympics.
Social Dancing Or Competition?
Many classify dancesport as a type of social dancing, though this is mostly a misconception since dancers all flock to the dance floor and show off their techniques. In truth, this type of dance is classified as a sport activity that is mostly described as a competition to display assorted ballroom dancing techniques and maneuvers in front of the judges and live audience.
If you observe closely, dancesport competition follows a set of rules. Music denotes what type of ballroom dancing you are going to perform on the floor. However, dancers are free to come up with their own unique maneuvers to impress the judges and win the prize.
International Competition
The World Dance Council was once called International Council of Ballroom Dancing (ICBD) that regulates dancesport competition around the globe. The council was formed in 1950 in Edinburgh with affiliate sponsors including Ballroom Dancers Federation that helps regulate these competitions in various sectors in an international level.
The very first dancesport competition was held in 1909, the first team of ballroom dancing competition in 1932, and became a live TV broadcast in 1960.
Due to the insistence of the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF), the International Olympic Committee recognized dancesport as a sports activity in 1997 and included in their roll of sports competition though not all Olympic games have this in their main event.
In most cases, we can safely say that this ballroom dancing competition requires a sponsor before it can be included in Olympic Games with the inclusion of a vote among its council.
However, there have been many critics in the inclusion of dancesport as an Olympic event. Judging is often done through appeal and how dancers impress judges. Scoring in these competitions is considered to be dubious as well — opening to the possibility of disguising fraudulent judgment with anonymous decisions with no definite criteria and scores.
Despite the subjective ruling of dancesport competitions, the ballroom dancing arena is still a much celebrated event in various countries around the globe.
Different Styles
Dancesport is not limited to specific ballroom dancing styles known today. Considering that it is dubbed as an International competition, various styles are known to be incorporate into dance routines that include standard ballroom, Latin American dance steps, Ten Dance, and diverse Rock and Roll maneuvers.
Today, this competitive dancing is introduced by various social groups to promote ballroom dancing to a whole new level. Television shows are known to use competitive dancing as a means to find new talents in the industry. Dancesport has also been introduced in social events, like college proms and athletic competitions.
Also, health groups reported that active maneuvers of ballroom dancing have a positive role in our body’s health. Today, dancesport is being introduced as an alternative solution to main proper body function and weight loss.

The favourite was the Jewson winner Chapoturgeon who fell in the early stages. shuffle board
To be scored, all weights must make it over the foul line closest to the shooters. To determine whether it is on the foul line or not, the legal determination is made by looking down directly over the top of the weight from the scoring end of the board. If a weight bounces back into the foul zone, it is considered illegal, even though it originally passed the line. The fine wood tables that are like miniature bowling alleys used in bars and restaurants are the high quality tables that can cost $10,000. If you love table shuffleboard, you might be disappointed, if you don’t make the same investment for your home table.

The Dream Is Still Alive For Dream Alliance
Dream Alliance’s ’story’ would take some beating should he strike gold in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree.
The Philip Hobbs-trained nine-year-old, born on a disused allotment on an old slag-heap in Cefn Fforest, was bred by an old breeder of racing pigeons.
His career looked as though it was going to be cut short when he sustained a tendon injury at Aintree in April 2008, but following pioneering stem-cell surgery, he performed a Lazarus-like comeback to win this season’s Welsh Grand National.
Hobbs’s gelding is owned by the Alliance Partnership, a 22-strong syndicate which was formed by a group of members from a Gwent valleys social club.
Dream Alliance’s return to the big time has also aroused the interest of Hollywood, with connections having signed a one-year exclusivity deal with a Los Angeles-based film company.
“It would be a fairytale for the owners, and the horse seems in very good form for horse racing today,” said Hobbs. “We were disappointed with his last run at Haydock, but he sometimes isn’t the most consistent and has done similar things before.
“We haven’t schooled him over any National-type fences, but we never have done with any of our horses.”
Another looking for a fairytale finish is Tony McCoy, who is without a National win in 14 attempts and tries this time with the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Don’t Push It.
McCoy said: “It was very tough as JP (McManus) has four runners, but Don’t Push It is the one I think has the ability to show up well on the day. He has a bit of class and that is why I went for him.
“The Grand National is the race we all want to win and from the public perspective it is the greatest race in the world. You only get one chance a year in it and you need everything to go right – it is not easy to win.”

Always Waining Runs Away With Topham Chase
Always Waining ran away with an incident-packed renewal of the John Smith’s Topham Chase over the National fences at Aintree.
Ridden by Brian Hughes for Peter Bowen, the nine-year-old could be seen travelling and jumping sweetly throughout as Frankie Figg set a tremendous pace up front, and for a long way the race only concerned the front two.
Always Waining (22-1) was definitely travelling the better when Frankie Figg unseated Wilson Renwick two fences from home, which meant he came home in splendid isolation. Scotsirish ran a cracker under top weight to finish second, but he was 12 lengths away.
Hughes said: “That was amazing and it’s all down to him. There were some great jumps – he’s not very big, but he’s brave. Peter Bowen has done some training performance. He said he had him back to his best for horse racing today.
“I’m just delighted to get such a brilliant spare ride. I’ve had a few nice victories, but to have a winner over the National fences is something else.”
Trainer’s wife Karen Bowen added: “He did it brilliantly. A lot of people had written him off, but I had confidence in him because he’d run really well round here last year. He finished fourth and he jumped absolutely brilliantly.
“I thought the big fences would bring a revival out of him, but I didn’t realise just how much.
“He was really well handicapped. He was off 12lb less than when he was fourth in this race last year. He hasn’t been running up to form, but I think he’s been keeping a bit up his sleeve for himself. He just loves these fences.”
Frankie Figg’s rider Renwick said: “I had a great ride off him. I thought he still had every chance, he was still picking up. He’s put down at the second-last and got in a bit tight and his back-end came up a bit high.”
